PSP Evaluation Process
The evaluation process at PSP is highly comprehensive and aims to address all physical aspects of sports. Variables such as speed, strength, agility, conditioning, and risk of injury are all measured to create the most effective training program. Periodic re-evaluations are also used over the course of training to better track progress and the effectiveness of the training program. The evaluation is comprised of two parts, the Sports Performance Evaluation and the Injury Risk Screen.
Sports Performance Evaluation The sports performance evaluation is a series of tests administered by PSP’s strength and conditioning staff to measure the athlete’s physical potential in the areas of strength, speed, power, agility, and conditioning. This gives the coach a snapshot of the athlete’s physical potential as well as an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Periodic re-evaluations allow the coach to track progress made by the athlete. The primary goal of the initial athlete evaluation is to generate a training program for the athlete. It allows the coach to determine their training status and develop an individualized training plan to address the specific needs of the athlete, their sport, and ensure that the program is appropriate for the athlete’s training level. Injury Risk Screen The injury risk screen is the second part of PSP’s two-part athlete evaluation process. It is conducted by our on-site doctor of physical therapy with the aim of identifying potential risk factors that can lead to injury. It also has the secondary goal of correcting for and managing any current or previous injuries. The screen uses the standardized Functional Movement Screen in addition to sport specific tests. Numerous variables that can lead to injury are assessed, such as stability, mobility, weakness, and asymmetry. The results gained from this screen are incorporated into the athlete’s strength and conditioning program. This ensures that the exercise selection is appropriate for the athlete and also allows for individualization and specific corrective exercises to be incorporated. Having this cooperation between strength and conditioning coach and physical therapist allows for the most effective training plan and makes it possible to maximize the results for the athlete. |
